What makes African American art so significant?
When you display a work of African American art in your house, you honor not only the current generation of artists but also all the generations before them. You honor the history of a people that, despite all of the efforts made to keep them down, never gave up on their abilities.

It’s critical that you understand more about the context and history of modern African American art, whether you plan to add it to your home collection or simply incorporate it into your décor. Even though many of us are aware of the broad concepts that served as the foundation for modern African American art, we can better incorporate it into our homes and hearts the more we are aware of these concepts.

It’s noteworthy that modern African American art existed long before the term “modern art” was used. However, while the majority of these early works of modern African American art were produced for utilitarian purposes, other African Americans started to produce portraits as works of art. These African American painters were encouraged by the Harlem Renaissance movement to enter the modern African American art phase.

The opportunity for African American art to not only be accepted but also appreciated in artistic circles was made possible by the fact that more artists than ever were receiving recognition for their work. When you display a work of African American art in your house, you honor not only the current generation of artists but also all the generations before them. You honor the history of a people that, despite all of the efforts made to keep them down, never gave up on their abilities.
